August: Meeting Jesus

Meeting Jesus
by Howard Webber
THE subtitle of this book is ‘Inspiring stories of modern-day evangelism’, and this small volume certainly lives up to that claim.

Major Howard Webber, who has been an officer for 30 years, writes about some of the ‘divine appointments’ he has had with people: interactions with those who, often unbeknown to him, were searching for the gospel. He writes about trying to obey those ‘nudges’ from the Holy Spirit that we all receive from time to time, noting that ‘there is more going on in people than one can ever detect’.

The last few chapters look at a biblical basis for evangelism, and remind us that God is already at work in the world. ‘If we were more tuned into what God is already doing in the lives of those around us,’ the major observes, ‘we might be less clumsy in our evangelism.’

Some of the stories could have been a little shorter, and the explanation of various Salvation Army terms might be distracting, but don’t be put off – if you want evidence of God at work in the Army today this book will inspire you.
